The Rivers

Chicago borders Lake Michigan. The Chicago and Des Plains Rivers runs through the city, via a canal, and have both shipping and pleasure traffic.

A lock connects this "downtown river canal" to the lake. If you  happen to live in BSI, you wouldn't recognise this as a lock, as the Chicago lock doesn't let water flow under it! You know, the way they made locks on the olden days before the EPA.

Tour boats ply the river and we took a cruise on one. A series of 13 drawbridges (2 shown below) cross the river at street level and are used to allow tall ships through the waterway.
